Neighborhoods working to reduce crime

The Uptown Consortium, in cooperation with the UC Policing Institute has prepared comprehensive crime analysis reports for each Uptown neighborhood. These reports are intended to help community councils develop neighborhood-specific strategies for reducing crime, such as the proposed Uptown camera surveillance initiative.

According to Captain Bailey, Cincinnati Police District 5 commander, innovative, neighborhood-specific approaches are critical to crime prevention.  “That’s why the Cincinnati Police is committed to working with community organizations, local businesses, the media and the University of Cincinnati to continually educate people about how not to be a victim of crime,” said Captain Bailey.

Examples of some current efforts include CeaseFire Cincinnati, a community-based movement to reduce gun-related homicides in Avondale and the proposed creation of an Uptown camera surveillance system.

How can I make my neighborhood safer?

•    Support the Uptown Consortium’s camera surveillance initiative by making a monetary donation.

•    Become involved in Community Problem Oriented Policing (CPOP). In this program, members of the community work with the Cincinnati Police to create effective strategies to reduce crime and disorder, while at the same time building a trust between the neighborhoods and the police. For additional information, please contact Amy Krings Barnes, at the Greater Cincinnati Urban League, 513-602-2390 or akrings@gcul.org.

•    Help support CeaseFire’s mission by spreading its key messages: Stop the shooting! Stop the killing! CeaseFire, which started serving Avondale in October of 2006, meets once a month and hosts coalition meetings for those who want to get involved. Meetings are held the third Tuesday of each month, from 5:30 to 6:30 pm at the Avondale Pride Center. CeaseFire needs the support of the entire Uptown community to make Avondale a safer place to live. If you would like CeaseFire to give a presentation to your church, school or youth group, or for additional information about CeaseFire, please call 513-675-4102.
